How to do a proper clean install
« on: Feb 20, 2011; 07:36 AM »
Hey all, I probably should have put this in Guides but it seemed to fit in support better.
so here gos

I do this with every game, app or utility that I remove from my computer, its just a good practice to remove any
remnents of old software from your system, to help prevent conflicts.

If you wish to retain your old save games then you're going to have to copy them to a neutral location like my documents before deleting anything, I would name it something like HGL old save games

This should work on XP systems as well, it maybe worded different (aka My Computer and the such).
In Vista or Win 7

First:Use the disk to uninstall the game or use the uninstall feature in the programs menu,
if those do not exist then go to the remove programs feature in the control panel,
this can be found by clicking Start/Computer there is a radial button just below the target window that says "Uninstall or change a program"
"do not" restart if asked, return to desktop when its done.

Second:Click Start/Computer then double click C Drive (or whatever drive you're using to store the game)
then double click on program files then you should see a folder named Flagship Studios, right click it then click delete
in the drop down menu, return to the desktop.

Third:Now you must go into your registry and clean it out of anything that has Flagship Studios, or Hellgate London.
Read the registry entry's carefully before deleting them or you may mess-up a different game or app
If you dont trust yourself in the registry then get yourself a utility/app like C-Cleaner and use its registry cleaner
(C-Cleaner is a free download) it works pretty good. Same warning, read entry's carefully before checking for deletion.

Forth:Now empty your recycle bin, no I'm not joking, empty it, you want no remnants of the game left on your computer.

Fifth: Restart your computer, this is only to make sure that everything is gone and you have a clean slate to work with.

You can now install the game and the patches as instructed in this guide viewtopic.php?f=77&t=991
as well as any mods you wish to use that are compatible.
These instructions are the same for any game, just substitute the publisher, developer and the game names.

I put this info together for the folks who are new to doing a clean install or not familiar with computers....So veterans please dont take offense.
Also I didn't include the registry entry's that need to be deleted because they can be too numerous and change depending on OS.

Guys, if I missed anything, please by all means add to the info.
All is cloaked in darkness and the darkness is my home. I shun the light but still I fight, until the dark is safe once again.

there's a way to avoid reinstalling HGL.

after you've finished installing all the official patches and ran the game once, go to your Hellgate LondonData folder and copy all .idx files somewhere.

these are the files which are changed during mod installation, and you can revert back to original HGL by just restoring them and deleting any additional mod files.
