Desktop will not turn on [NOT HELLGATE RELATED]
« on: Dec 18, 2009; 02:18 PM »
Hey everyone,
OK, I know I have to ask for assistance a little too often, but hey if it makes any difference; this time it is not my computer, I have gone to extreme measures to fix and there is no way in hell that it is my fault. =D

OK, so it is a desktop, right?
It wasn't used for a long time, about 6 months, now this computer is brand new, it can handle Farcry 2 full graphics (aswell as Crysis, just in case you have not seen FC2 and do not know its graphic potential).  So, this computer was sitting in a corner collecting cobwebs, when suddenly it needed to be used. It was plugged in and all set up we pressed that power button and....nothing happened..

We checked the power supply and everything, it was receiving power, googled and everything, all of this lead to buying a new PSU (Power supply unit, though if you didn't know that I would be a bit scared with taking your advice. O_O), this was actually done, a very expensive PSU was bought and placed inside the computer, all the output and everything was taken into consideration.

So we set it up again and pressed the power button....nothing again..After a lot of time spend researching and such, it boiled down to the motherboard or CPU, after even more researching the proper replacement was found, i.e. one that was compatible with everything.

So a new motherboard AND new CPU were bought (along with some brand spanking new DDR3 RAM, yeah this thing is costing a fortune..) they were all put together and BAM, pressing the power resulted in a working computer!

..
....
I am kidding..
Otherwise there would be no reason to sink to the lowest of the low of asking you guys for assistance..
..
....
Again, I am kidding
..

OK, so we have practically replaced the whole computer, what could it be?
The last thing I can think of is the case...
Yes, the most unlikely think you could possibly think of..
Maybe the case is making contact with the motherboard and therefore the motherboard is NOT powering up! ><

This was somewhat proved when we took the parts out of the computer and ran them like that...
It worked..(Well, better than they did inside it anyway)

Thank you all, again, any help would be appreciated. :P

Three possibilities come to mind:

The switch on the case itself is no longer functioning
The little wires from the case that plug into the headers on the motherboard are shot.
The back of the motherboard is actually making contact with the case itself and creating a short: 1) verify that mobo is entirely resting on "stand-offs" 2) check that the case wall itself is not bowing inward and contacting the motherboard 3) is there anything between the mobo and the case wall?

Is it plugged in?

Sounds like motherboard, I recently had to replace mine, a power surge or anything of the like throws them off. Case is unlikely unless you are using old cords. Try to replace cording first, check connections, then replace motherboard is my advice.

I thought it was the motherboard cos i took out all the parts except power, cpu and mobo and it did the same thing.

So i bought a new mobo and CPU, put it all in - and the exact same problem!

So i took it all back out, and put the mobo (with CPU) on a desk, plugged in power and it turned on OK.

So i'm thinking it's touching the case *somehow* which I can't figure out because

a) it was working fine for ages with the old mobo
b) all the little gold things that separate it from the case are there and fine, and there's nothing that could cause contact.

So I'll try a new case.

REALLY BIZARRROOOO!
