Level 55 Elite Nightmare Guardian (SP 1.2) + Videos
« on: Feb 03, 2010; 06:45 PM »
Hi! I am through playing with my Elite Nightmare Guardian character. I thought it might be fun to share it with you guys. This character was ported over from the original Hellgate at level forty something to SP 1.2. Other than the mods used with SP 1.2, the character has not been modified in anyway.

He is quite strapped for Nanoshards and Palladium and will work hard for them as he needs them to upgrade some of his items. Also, there are still 8 attributes points and one skill point unallotted. This level 55 character has killed Sydonai once with a Shield and a Grenade Launcher with Fire Splash damage at Elite Nightmare mode.

He is essentially a Shield-based character. You would be surprised at how powerful Shield Bash can be from Level 9 onwards. His skill tree (Great Defender, Aura of Renewal and Prayer of Retribution came from enhancements):

If I had a chance to re-do the tree, the following would be done:

    a. Remove Stampede and put that one point into maximizing Shield Bash.

    b. Remove 8 points from Anchor and put it into Shield of Faith. Then I would cast this before/during each attack.

Use the single remaining Skill point for Shield of Faith too.
********************************************************************

No point has been allotted to Accuracy. They all come from +AA enhancements and yet, he uses the Shield and Grenade Launcher most of the time at higher levels to control mobs and killing from a distance. This build also depends heavily on Willpower and it is not surprising to note that he has more points allotted to them as compared to Strength. As such, three points have been allotted to Spiritual Strength. High Health is very important to him as he tends to tank recklessly with Shield Charge.

***************************************************************************************************

Weapon Set 1

Very suitable for one-to-one attack (except Sydonai): Shield Charge ==> Anchor ==> Shield Bash ==> Sword of Reckoning or normal sword attack. Usually, he Shield Bashes his victim twice followed by normal sword attack five times; then he repeats the attack cycle. If the enemy is strong, Sword of Reckoning would be most appropriate. But watch out for that Willpower consumption.

Shield Turn is constantly used for mobs and is very powerful.
***************************************************************************************************

Weapon Set 2

This was created for attack of flying creatures, especially for those ugly looking fishes that float on air. This weapon set has Great Defender for use when necessary. Over use of this skill kills the fun but is completely necessary in Hell when used against Bedlam.

Great Defender (optional, use sparingly) ==> Anchor (at Level 8) ==> Hand Grappler to pull creature ==> Phase Blade to kill creature.

Do not underestimate the Hand Grappler. It is pretty powerful under such circumstances.

***************************************************************************************************
Weapon Set 3

Favorite weapon set. This is only powerful when the character levels up. Not so great at lower levels, but lots of fun. Very suitable against Zombie Summoners. In such a case, fire splash damage controls the mob, while Shield Turn or Shield Bash kills the Zombie Summoner easily. It is also great for attacking from a distance, up to 30 m.

This weapon set was also put together to have a decent amount of Shield Penetration. With this, the combination can damage  creatures and at the same time, breaking down their shield. This is very important. Do not wait for the enemies' shield to be broken down before injuring them. You will die real quick in sticky situation e.g. when faced with Rage Furies.

High health? 2000 hp is not a lot of HP dude.
As for the weapons, we still need armor info and actual weapon damage.

"High Health is very important to him" was what he wrote - not "he has high health"  ;)

Killing Lies and Sydonai with this Guardian build
« Reply #3 on: Feb 05, 2010; 04:54 PM »
[Weapon set 1]
Discord and and Rash can be despatched off easily with Anchor ==> Repeated Shield Bash + Sword Attack.

***************************************************************************************************************************

[Weapon set 3]
Kill Flaw from a distance with the Grenade Launcher. Stay far enough so that he won't be able to hit you with his thunder spikes. Flaw's Fire Elementals won't be able to harm you either.

***************************************************************************************************************************

[Weapon set 3]
Despair can be similarly killed with the Grenade Launcher. Shield Bash the critter when it gets too near you.

***************************************************************************************************************************

[Weapon set 2]
The most problematic of the Lies is obviously Bedlam. Constantly surrounded by Orbiles, Bedlam is a pain. The following may be used: Great Defender ==> Shock Shield ==> Rush directly under the spot where Bedlam is ==> Anchor ==> Use the Grappler and pull it towards you ==> Attack with Phase Blade or Switch to weapon set 1 for attack. Back off and try again if the situation gets too hot. Eventually, Bedlam will be history. On hindsight, having Shield of Faith before attacking might be useful.

**************************************************************************************************************************

[Weapon set 1 or 3]

The trick is not to let Sydonai attack you from a distance with his bolts. They are too difficult to handle. So, stay close to him like a leach and Shield Bash (NOT Shield Turn) him + Sword attack or Grenade Launcher continuously. Sword of Reckoning doesn't appear to be that effective as he moves away when attacked with this skill. When the situation gets out of hand, sprint away to recover and then re-attack. Of course, using Great Defender really helps now.

I  :) think :)  Sydonai can't attack you if he doesn't face you. Once, he was trapped in some sort of structure and he couldn't turn round. So, my Guardian shield bashed his buttocks and burnt him with the Grenade Launcher till he died.  :D

interesting way to eliminate deamonkind :D . that shows how "flexible" guardians are.

but I think most effective method is a brute force and a wall of steel... I mean some sword with high damage and huge amount of armor... having around 94% damage absorbation and maxed Aura of Renewal beats anything :)

Short history of this Guardian build
Guys, thanks for the comments. Here's a short history of this build:

I started off playing a double-wielding Gun Guardian in MP mode. Whilst your team members can overcome one another player's weaknesses, the shortcomings of the Gun Guardian was apparent in PvP and also, when faced with a strong boss and his minions in a very tight situation.

And one more thing: creatures catch fire easily. That explains the fire splash damage (I used an enhanced mod as I could not find a rare mod that gave better splash damage) and Shield Penetration for the Grenade Launcher. Spectral splash from the Grenade Launcher doesn't seem to do much when confronted with a mob.

So, I tweaked this build to my liking, but also making sure he can survive in solo mode. As such, he is not the "pure" Guardian as expected.

You might have noticed that I have put many points in Sword of Reckoning. This was also a carry over from the MP days. In MP, the tanks and the rest (MM, Summoner) would attack and distract Sydonai from the front while another tank would attack from behind using Shield Charge ==> Anchor ==> Sword of Reckoning with the most powerful sword that he has. This also explains the large number of points invested in Power.

Maybe, next time, I try the "pure" Guardian build. [Right now, I am hooked onto Mass Effect 2]  :D

BTW, has anyone finished the Hell quest with an Elite Nightmare Evoker (with no additional tweaking, save for the mods that came with SP 1.2)? I can only complete one St Paul's quest. Is the Evoker really that weak or am I playing it wrongly?

I completed it LONG ago, WAY back when max level was 50 and we didn't have revival. It was a VERY difficult run and i almost gave up several times. Took me about 2 weeks of gear farming and tuning to pull it off. IIRC, I had to clear all of Hell, leaving Bedlam til last. Once bedlam was dead, was just me and Syd with tons of room to maneuver. Not sure, but I think I used a spectral Lash build with a ton of Phase strength on one focus and Ignite strength on the other. Phase him then light him on fire. Took some time, but i finally managed.

I thought it would be nice if I included videos of the Guardian doing his quest.

Tanking from St Paul's to Hell
Killing Flaw
Killing Despair
Killing Rash
Killing Bedlam
Killing Discord
Killing Sydonai

BTW, the videos were captured using Fraps, downsized using Windows Movie Maker and then uploaded to Gamecam Portal.

Wish I could, but I've been thru 4 moves, 2 computers and an unknown number of re-installs since then. Not to mention, I hadn't played since Flagship tanked, then I saw someone mention Revival in a forum somewhere. Came over here, poked around, paid my dues and grabbed the goodies and ran like mad. Now the 2 highest level toons I have are a lvl 40 marksman and lvl 39 engineer.

Best advice I can give is to build your own set of armor, heavy on stun and phase resists. On yer focus items, get 2x 4 slot foci. load one down with Phase strength and one with Ignite. Phase him (very hard to do) and then set him on fire. Try to stay behind him too.

Tempest/Arc Legion/ Skullsplitter. Extra points can go into venom armor, dual focus, spectral curse, blink, concentrate damage, or whatever else you want.
