This guy who totally isn't me graduated from college and decided he wanted to start working on his first game. Fast-forward about five years later and he had almost nothing to show for it. He had had some trouble with focus, finding reliable people to help him with his project, and had zero funding to work with.
Then, a few months ago, this guy that still totally isn't me used a small portion of money from his own pocket to start a new project. The new project is called Hellrift, and is in many ways, a spiritual successor to Hellgate: London.
Hellrift takes place in a futuristic America that has been overrun by monsters (some would call them demons). The player will choose a character class, kill lots of monsters, get tons of randomly generated loot, earn skill points, take quests, craft items, and more.
So far, the team behind Hellrift has created several of the core gameplay mechanics (including the foundation for the random loot system), most of the assets needed to build the first level (which is currently a WIP), several pieces of concept art, and they just brought people on board to start working on the initial character and monster.
The lead dev of Hellrift will be hosting a Twitch stream on Sunday, Sept. 4th, from 12 Noon to 8PM Eastern time. During the stream, he will be asking for donations, which will be split evenly between Hellrift and a local animal shelter/rescue.
Hellgate fans are encouraged to follow the Hellrift development page on Facebook, and to attend the stream if able.
Go here to see concept art and learn more information about the stream. This obviously will not be successful without the support of the gaming community, so that guy (who isn't me) and his team would really appreciate any support that you can give.https://www.facebook.com/fledglingstudios/
I have attached a piece of the concept art from their page to give you a taste of the aesthetic they are working towards.
PS: I'm totally the guy in this story and I am happy to answer any questions anyone might have about this new project. I hope to see some of you on the stream this Sunday, but even if you can't make it, please mention it to fellow gamers, Hellgate fans, and animal lovers.
