Title: Installing Reanimator and using the Item Trading function
Post by: Kite on Aug 20, 2010; 11:07 PM
As there still seem to be quite a few problems and questions on how to use Reanimator to trade items I decided to add this small "tutorial" on how to do it.

Installing Reanimator:
Before installing Reanimator, make sure you have the .Net Framework 3.5 installed. You can check your currently installed .Net versions by running this little tool: VersionCheck Utility (http://http://www.tmgdevelopment.co.uk/versioncheck.htm). If you don't have .Net 3.5 or 4.0 installed, you can find the installer here (http://http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyId=333325fd-ae52-4e35-b531-508d977d32a6&displaylang=en). After that just extract the Reanimator tool to wherever you like, it doesn't have to be a specific folder.

To install Reanimator you first have to revert your game to its original state by removing all your installed mods including our Revival patches. To do this open the "newLauncher" and click the "Revert/Uninstall mod" button. After successfully uninstalling all modifications open Reanimator and it should start extracting all the files it needs to work. After you see the "Successful!" message you can reinstall all your previous mods again. Do NOT start the game and load characters between uninstalling and installing your mods as all items added through our patches will disappear!

If you're doing a clean install:

1. Install HGL
2. Install the official 1.2 patch
3. Start HGL and create/play a character
4. Install Reanimator
5. Install the 1.2.1 patch
6. Install optional mods

In some rare cases Reanimator might report a missing exceltables.txt.cooked file. If this is the case for you, you can download the file below, unzip it and place it in your "data_common/excel" (and "Reanimator/data_common/excel") folder if it is not already there. This should do the trick :)
[attachment=0:3kb3aphm]exceltables.txt.cooked.zip[/attachment:3kb3aphm]

Trading Items:
One small advice:
Using the Item Trading function may corrupt your character savegames! Make sure to unequip all weapons and shields from the three weapon slots (F1 - F3) before continuing and create backups of all characters you're going to trade with! If you notice some strange behavior when starting the game with a character you traded with (e.g. weapon slots not displaying the weapons you place in them) IMMEDIATELY quit the game and DO NOT load any other characters! Either restore your backup (and that of the other character you traded with so you don't lose the items) or restart the game to see if the bug still exists.

Before starting Reanimator make sure your characters have access to the Transmogrifying Cube and all items you want to trade are place inside. Then start up Reanimator and go to "Tools" -> "Trade Items" to open the transfer window. Select the character you want to use for trading and click the "load" button.

If you want to trade over a single item click the item you want to trade and hit the "Trade selected item" button (make sure the other character has enough free space in his Cube)

If you want to exchange the whole Cube content, click the "Exchange items" button

If you want to delete an item you don't need anymore, click the "Delete item" button

If you want to revert your trades and/or undo all deletes, click the "Undo transfer/Reload" button BEFORE saving

If your want to save all trades, just click "Save traded items"

How to enable item trading images:
1. Download the multiplayer TCv4 patch from here (DDL (http://http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=1856)) or here (torrent (http://http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=80&t=2202)).
2. Install it and start MP mode once so the game can extract all files
3. Future versions of the item trading will access the image files directly, but this version requires you to extract the images from the game files. These files will require about 300MB of additional disk space! (and about 150-200MB of additional RAM when item trading uses these images :P)
To do this

EDIT:
I finally managed to figure out how and why the weapon slot bug occurs and I'm trying to fix it. However things aren't looking good, but here's what I can tell you about it:

A german version of this guide can be found here (http://http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=2113).
Die deutsche Version dieser Anleitung findet ihr hier (http://http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=53&t=2113&p=28959#p28959).

A great idea and most helpful indeed.
How about having it sticky'd too,so it could be found easier?Just a suggestion there.

Yep, that's my plan :) Sadly I'm lacking the means of doing so xD Gotta ask Mal or somebody else...

Well if it's within a moderator's capabilities I could have it done myself.Though I'm gonna have to find out how to do it first

Hey there im new to this game and loveing it. old d2 pro. shame what happend to this game, slack ass flagship studios....

anyway i have a problem (and a question for after)
took me a while but i sifted through everything and got the revival mod and reanimator going... but the "Item Transfer" button under Tools is greyed out.. i have a lvl 12 summoner elite that has some gear for a brand new Blademaster that i have just made with the new revival mod...they both have cubes and the items are in the cube ready to b transfered.
also the background image of the reanimator has now disapeared. I could really use some help in this as i am loving this game but only play single player... if i wanna keep the life-span on this game i gotta transfer items.

what am i doing wrong?

oh and p.s. what is the BEST summoner build for end game? (currently lvl 12 in elite with no skill points spent)

thanx in advance and i hope ur still around to read this :)

If it is greyed out it sounds like you might be using an older version of Reanimator... Make sure you're really using the newest official build (http://http://www.hellgateaus.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=69&t=1941). Don't mind the greyed-out "Item Shop" button as this was just some debugging stuff and will be removed in the future, but the "Trade Items" button above should be working.

I didn't know we had a background image in Reanimator O.o Could it be that you're talking about the old java version of reanimator?

Howdy Mektopath,welcome.

For Normal difficulty almost any build will do,so long as it's a build and not points randomly spread out everywhere. :P
For Nightmare end-game (even more so,Nightmare -Elite-) I'd suppose either a Carnagor-based build or a Witch Doctor-based build for survivability.Self-healing for obvious reasons,a Blood Link to back up your minion and then come the Elementals for DoT.An Elemental Nova could really help there too.
If that sounded too vague I could make some more specific suggestions, but just so you know beforehand I'm not really the Summoner expert around here. :P

@Kite Lol,my post would end with the line "Can't help you with the Reanimator bit though, perhaps someone else could be of assistance there" but then I saw you'd posted first

When trading items I get an error parsing a character file when trying to load 2 of my 9 chars. Is this get-aroundable?

When starting Reanimator, it caches every time ( saying "first time" cache). Is this always necessary? If you just leave Reani running will it cache over time or must you manually update it?

I had a bunch of words but i paired it down to this. Watch out, I will probably have more questions eventually. This is day 1.

Thanks for this tool Kite, being able to trade items in SP is a dream come true, even if I haven't successfully done it yet. :)

Let's see... If you really get a parsing error that means your character file is damaged or incompatible in some way... We could not figure out why this is (might be because of some other previously installed mod, might be because the character was created with HGL 1.0, etc.). I don't know if we'll be able to do anything about this problem or if we'll even have a look at it... We'll just have to see how things work out.

Are you using Reanimator 1.1.0 (from the Lounge) or the "official" release version 1.0.3 from the "File Release" section? As far as I know 1.0.3 still uses the old version of the file caching, the new Reanimator 1.1.0 (and above) won't load all files at startup, but when they're actually needed.

When it is "first time caching" every time, you're probably using 1.0.3 and there might be some leftover registry entries from a previous Renimator installation. Try to open the windows system tool "regedit.exe" and browse to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Software -> Reanimator" and delete the Reanimator entry. Now start up Reanimator again and it should load the files correctly.

One char was created pre fun patch, possibly pre FSS 1.2 as well, while the other was created in fun patch 1.0 stable. Interestingly enough both problem chars are engi's, no other classes are affected. I have other super old (out of the box) characters that have no problem loading.

I do have the old version of the Re-ani, the only version I have installed so far, but I will update to the new one, that will only help I am sure.

Good to know you have seen this error before, even if you dont know why it is happening. In game my problem chars play great and nothing seems amiss. If I accidently geek another char for trading, hopefully I will be able to figure out why. Thanks!

EDIT:
Ok I found the problem... The "isDead" flag is interpreted wrongly. If your character dies right before saving, the savegame will mark the character as "dead" and this will be considered "invalid" by Reanimator xD A quick workaround is to just restart the game, load these characters and save right away, so the "isDead" entry will be reset to 0. This will be fixed in the next Reanimator release :)

If this doesn't solve your problem, it'd be nice if you'd send me your two characters for further analyses.

Excellent. That appears to work. You know your stuff Kite! This works for the non lounge release of ReAni.

Another question, in running initially, the Lounge version said "G:hellgatetcv4dataexcelITEMQUALITY.txt.cooked" was not found as well as some others. These files are, however, physically present in the folder. What did I do wrong here?

edit: it appears that the files are viewable, cacheable, and accessible from within ReAni so I think I am good to go.

Gonna make a shy attempt to make a thread about it,soon as my modem snaps out of that "found-not found" identity crisis.

Can't help with that error message as it is probably related to some old code... All functions (and errors) are subjected to constant changes as we're still integrating the core functionality. Later on the TCv4 loading will either be added as optional feature, or you might not even see/need it anymore as they're loaded directly from the game files. Just bear with it for now :)

But it's good to hear that Reanimator is working and that the character loading problem is fixed know :)

They're not used, its a bug in the old Reanimator version... As far as I know we will release a new version within the next few days/weeks...
You could try to extract them, but I don't know if that'll help... when do you get this message/what are you trying to do when you get it?

Ah no wonder you're getting that message... That's pretty normal as loading a character that way is not supported by Reanimator... If you want to trade items, use "Tools-> Trade Items".

Okey so i got a problem with Reanimator, cant get it to work anymore..
I reinstalled HGL. Played abit with a new toon then i patched it to the latest patch as posted here on the forums. Then i played abit more. Then i installed the SP mod Revival and played abit more. I uninstalled the revival mod and started up Reanimator and i got that error with exceltables.txt.cooked. I did what you wrote there, but still i cant get it to work.
I'm getting "File not found! D:GamesHGLdataexcel\ITEMQUALITY.txt.cooked"

I'm probably too slacky to search the forum, but just point me in the direction if there is any post about this.

Cheers

Edit: Oh yeah , it says that for every 'cooked' file (like alot of them)

What Reanimator version are you using? 1.0.3 or 1.1.0?

Ah ok phew... I can't really say I remember how 1.0.3 worked ^^ It's been a long time and we introduced lots of changes to the file handling. Best thing would probably be to just wait for the next Reanimator release. Another solution would be to just do a clean reinstall of everything as this helped everyone up till now...

I'll have to talk to maeyan about releasing 1.1.0 to non-founding members :) Founders get to test our releases before we release them to the broad public ^^

There's also the possibility that one of the patches/mods didn't install/uninstall correctly which might be the reason why it doesn't work for you anymore. After installing HGL and the official 1.2 SP Patch (and BEFORE installing our patches) it's always a good idea to backup all "idx" files in your "data" folder to make sure you got replacement files in case something like this happens.

Erm... partially xD While founders are the first members to have access to the files they're also the first ones to encounter new bugs and therefore risk their characters/game installation :P
The moment a Reanimator version is released to the broad public most of the bugs and workarounds to prevent them are already known so it's a lot safer to use our tools for you xD

But hey, when the final release it out. I think everyone is happy about it :D
Just something to look forward too anyway.

Stupid question maby, but how is Reanimator(future release) + Revival 2.0 coming along?

No new information on that, but I think maeyan or someone else will make an announcement about the future updates, soon. As far as I know the most important parts of our tools have been implemented, so we'll soon be at a point where we can actually start to produce/convert new content.

If Reanimator is working fine, just return to using our "newLauncher" to install all your mods like before :) The mod install option inside of Reanimator is only experimental/for testing and not really meant to be used, yet.

You won't install the mods using reanimator. Install reanimator first and then go there viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1568 (http://hellgateaus.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=1568) download the installer and install the mods using this.

Hm... never really thought about that but I guess creating a character AFTER installing the official 1.2 Patch and BEFORE installing our 1.2.1 Patch/Reanimator would be the best choice.

1. If HGL is already installed and patched to 1.2 AND you already have the 1.2.1 Revival patch installed, use the "newLauncher" to uninstall all custom fun mods ("Revert/Uninstall mods") and continue with #5. Don't start the game and play with any character before you reinstall 1.2.1 or you will lose your items! If you're doing a fresh HGL install, continue with #2.
2. Install HGL
3. Patch it with the official 1.2 patch
4. Start a game/create a character/play for a bit
5. Install Reanimator using the guide in the fiirst post
6. Install the 1.2.1 patch and after that any other additional mod you want to use via the "newLauncher"
7. Play

That sounds like the 1.2.1 mod installation didn't work correctly... Try starting up the "newLauncher" and click on "install mod" and select our 1.2.1 revival patch .mod.zip file. Report ANY errors or warning messages you get during the installation process.

Our launcher provides you with a "character backup" feature which makes sure that your character is safe after installing new mods. For this the character is zipped into a special folder BEFORE starting the game. There should be no need to unzip it and move it to the savegame folder. What happens if you just don't do anything, will the character still appear in the character selection screen?

Hello. I installed Reanimator the other day and finally had a chance to trade some items between characters of mine. Now that I've loaded them up again, I find that I can't switch between any weapon set for my characters (and analyzers and other impossible items managed to make it into the weapon slots). Is there any way I can fix this and get things back to normal?

Hey there Jackal,welcome.

What you encountered there is a bug,and quite an infamous one at that :P
Sadly I can't be of much help in solving it.An obvious solution would be to replace the affected characters' files with backups of them before the trade. If you happen to keep those, that is.I didn't. :(

Other than that,I've had a couple characters who had the issue solved by dismantling/destroying the items that had occupied the weapon slots and reloading the game.Though there's some downsides to this as well,I doubt that's what you had in mind when you asked for "a way to fix this and get things back to normal".
You'll lose the items you dismantle/destroy (naturally),as well as the items they had possibly replaced in the weapon slots (sadly,no way to bring back/restore these).Other than that,it's not guaranteed it will make the weapon slots functional again, let alone that "everything" will be back to normal.
And my complete lack of programming knowledge doesn't help in illustrating either xD

The thread Peter pointed to can also be of (quite) some help on the matter.

<grunt> been writing all this time, and he just so appropriately posts a link before I make my darn post. Why the hell didn't I think of posting that link in the first place...Grrr...

Excuse me by the way.You mentioned something about a what button?

Jackal

Currently the best way to avoid this problem is like posted in the guide on the first page of this thread:
Trading Items:
One small advice:
Using the Item Trading function may corrupt your character savegames! Make sure to unequip all weapons and shields from the three weapon slots (F1 - F3) before continuing and create backups of all characters you're going to trade with! If you notice some strange behavior when starting the game with a character you traded with (e.g. weapon slots not displaying the weapons you place in them) IMMEDIATELY quit the game and DO NOT load any other characters! Either restore your backup (and that of the other character you traded with so you don't lose the items) or restart the game to see if the bug still exists.

If you encounter this problem, it is best to restore a savegame of your character (Reanimator should create one before each item trading save). While I managed to identify the cause of this bug I wasn't able to successfully eliminate it, yet.

My changes to the trading system actually made matters a bit worse... previously it was perfectly save to ADD items to one character as the bug only occured when you removed items from the invenotry. Due to new item handling mechanics the bug now occurs no matter if your character receives or give items...

Apologies everyone. I fired off that quick post before I went away for the weekend and didn't have the chance to search through everything for my answer first. I was able to pull recent enough backups so I didn't lose anything but the items I transferred (which, when compared to losing quite a bit of work leveling, is rather minor). I'm glad that they make automatic backups (smart idea!) and also glad that I decided to open the character up after playing for a few hours specifically to trade items so very little time was lost.

Kite, I will heed your advice about unequipping all weapons and shields first in the future.

Bryan, I did try to dismantle the items that might have affected things (saving the backup in case it didn't work) and that did not solve the issue. I tried dismantling everything in all three weapon slots, thinking somewhere one of them might have corrupted but it didn't change anything. And you were right about the way I asked my question... I was hoping someone found a way to do this without having to potentially lose a good item somewhere along the way. :)

Thanks again everyone!

Installing Reanimator:
To install Reanimator you first have to revert your game to its original state by removing all your installed mods including our Revival patches. To do this open the "newLauncher" and click the "Revert/Uninstall mod" button. After successfully uninstalling all modifications open Reanimator and it should start extracting all the files it needs to work. After you see the "Successful!" message you can reinstall all your previous mods again.

Ok shoot me if i am dumb. I have latest reanimator and have used the 7zip program to open it. It does not work. I have followed your instructions and reverted. At this point, are you saying now use the new launcher to open reanimator? Because i notice whenever i install mods, i get the successful message. I will add i have not tried using the launcher to open reanimator. So again, maybe i misread your notes...

Reanimator is a stand-alone program and has its own exe file to launch. Just unzip/rar/7 the compressed Reanimator package and launch the program afterwards by double-clicking the "Reanimator.exe".

Ok , here is the screen shot of the error. The error is on the top of the pic. Under it is all the files that were extracted .I have placed them on the desktop for easy location. I click on the reanimator icon (exe) and that is the error message that i get? So whats wrong?/

Oops, at a public library so cant attach files. The error message states this..

This is the grey box with the red circle with the white x in it... So what is the problem?

Make sure you have the .Net Framework 3.5 installed before you start up Reanimator. Is there any errorLog.xml file inside of the folder your Reanimator.exe is located? If there is, just zip it and send it to me, or open it inside of a text editor and paste its contents here.

Ok I dont have internet at home so i just got this now from the Microsoft site...

Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 contains many new features building incrementally upon .NET Framework 2.0 and 3.0, and includes .NET Framework 2.0 service pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.0 service pack 1.

"dotNetFx35setup.exe"

Is this what your talking about? I will install it tonite and try reanimator again..

Yep, that's it... only problem will be, that the program you have there is only the web installer, which requires an internet connection to load all the necessary files...

Make sure you download the full installer version (~200MB) LINK (http://http://download.microsoft.com/download/6/0/f/60fc5854-3cb8-4892-b6db-bd4f42510f28/dotnetfx35.exe)

Thanks for the quick response, I think I'll wait till it becomes public and try that new version. I get too many different error responses (including that cooked.tx not being there)

I am running win 7 64bit with 2 gig ram, 512m graphic card and Dual Core 1.5ghz

Some of the errors include

the data_common dire not actually being there after a install and patch to 1.2 sp

including that dir and the cooked.txt comes back with an error that includes data_commonexcel\*.txt files as not being there...and yes that extra is what is shown

This sounds like Reanimator doesn't access the correct folders when trying to load its files... Is this the first Reanimator version you're trying to install or did you use an older one before? Try using the "Tools -> Options" dialog to check wether your paths are set correctly and post the paths here so I can check wether they're the correct ones.

Installation Folder:C:GamesFlagship StudiosHellgate London

root directory: same as above

client dir: C:GamesFlagship StudiosHellgate LondonSP_x64hellgate_sp_dx9_x64.exe

I think I see a problem...well the problem...root directory, and now its not even doing much...well the only way to fix that is to uninstall and reinstall....

okay got it working, almost..am trying to add stats and skill points as well as palladium...can't seem to save it that way...so in the end it didn't work...

Just extract the files. I extracted them into a folder named Reanimator, but only to keep the root directory clean, so it's up to you if you want to do that.

I feel like I'm missing something here. I followed all the instructions in the OP, I have the MS .NET Framework 3.5, I don't get any errors when opening Reanimator...but when I click on Trade Items under the Tools menu, absolutely nothing happens. No pop-up, no 'working' sound or signal. Nothing. Am I missing a step? Because at the moment I might as well be clicking on the grey background :-

Hi there people!

I just tried using the trade function, but it doesn't work for me...

I do get the following stacktrace when trying to use it:

bei System.ThrowHelper.ThrowArgumentException(ExceptionResource resource)
 bei System.BitConverter.ToInt32(Byte[] value, Int32 startIndex)
 bei Revival.Common.FileTools.ByteArrayToInt32(Byte[] byteArray, Int32& offset)
 bei Hellgate.ExcelFile.ParseData(Byte[] buffer)
bei Hellgate.ExcelFile..ctor(Byte[] buffer, String filePath, Boolean isTCv4)
 bei Hellgate.FileManager.LoadTableFiles()

And here is the Message:

Das Zielarray ist nicht lang genug, um alle Elemente in der Auflistung zu kopieren. Überprüfen Sie Arrayindex und -länge.

I don't like to look into other people's code, so any help (a little bugfix maybe? ;)) would be appreciated.

Edit: Ok, I just had a look at the post above mine... I'm going to try that.

The trading function doesn't work in 1.1.1, so use an earlier version of reanimator.

Hi ppl,
I'm new to the site, even if I'm a very old Hellgate player (since 2008). I tried to download and install Reanimator, but, with all the versions linked on the site, I always get the same: downloading goes fine, and mostly even unpacking, but, every time I try to run it, it closes with a Windows error. My pc runs with Win XP, service pack 3, and I have .Net Framework 4.0 installed. All other Revival patches run fine, and the game is installed from an original disc, so I haven't any clue. Could someone here please help me?

Heya,welcome :)
I am not familiar enough with Reanimator to provide a solution sadly. What I can suggest is trying out the latest version in case it yields better results:

On page 1 of this thread somebody wrote about the isDead flag (something like that) and dying could cause an issue. And indeed, I died the first time with this char today. But the suggested solution to restart the game, load the character and save right after (how can I save? just exiting the game?) doesn't work.

Is there another possible fix/workaround for this issue?
Title: Re: Installing Reanimator and using the Item Trading function
Post by: Dank Rafft on Oct 18, 2015; 04:32 PM
I post that because I had this issue and saw another person a few years ago had the same one.

Just in case somebody uses Reanimator 1.03 for trading items and gets an error which says Reanimator can't locate exceltables.txt.cooked or something like that. That may happen when you reinstall the the game and delete the Reanimator folder in your installation directory. You won't be able to make it work again by reinstalling the game again.

Solution:
The issue lies in Windows registry. Open the registry (regedit.exe) and go to HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-993852019-2406394018-3352750600-1001\SOFTWARE\. There should be the folder Reanimator. Delete it and start Reanimator 1.03. After you've set the game path correctly Reanimator will create the necessary folders and structures again.

I hope this helps.

OK, I do that
