Automatic backup question
« on: Aug 10, 2009; 08:08 PM »
Is this going to be an option that can be turned off, or will it be set on permanently?

I know there is no way to please everyone at the same time. It's just I have backup software set so I can save the areas I want when I want.

All I'm a bit worried about is any risk of the auto backup backing up a corrupted save file over the top of a good file, or is it going to create sequential files in a folder maybe with a max number of saves per char 5-10. This would also help if someone wanted to "go back" a day or so with their saves.

If it's going to be sequential files in a folder, then I've got no problems with the backup being on permanently.

Cheer for any info. :)

Hi Jaknet!

Backing up your characters (savegames) is fully OPTIONAL. The launcher will have it enabled by default, but you simple have to untick a single checkbox on the program's main screen to turn it off completely.

These were my thoughts too, and I've taken it into consideration. The backup feature creates 'multi-generation' files (standard .ZIP archives) that include a date/time stamp in their filename. I you want, this will be done every time a character/savegame has changed - with no restriction on the number of backup files created / kept.

However, it's of course useful to be able to limit this. Thus, the launcher will allow you to customise the backup strategy to your preferences. You can increase the timespan inbetween backups (i.e. a character won't be backed up again during a certain interval), limit the number of backups per character (0-20, with 0 meaning 'no limit'), and set an overall size restriction. The size restriction means that the launcher will examine the used disk space after creation of (new) backups, and if it exceeds the limit, it will delete the oldest files/backups until the backup directory is sufficiently small again...

Cheers NiteHawk

I had feeling this would have been been already thought of and the options on the panel are way beyond what I was imagining (file age.. was just expecting it on either startup or shutdown). I especially really like the launcher options as I can run dx10, but my setup and HG:L do not play happily together in dx10 so I always stick to the dx9.

Thanks again for the info and looking forward to trying out all the hard work that's been done for this. :)
